Ask The Geek Productions

A brief history of a Geek

over 20 years of experience in traditional 35mm photography;
more than 10 years experience in digital manipulation;
4 years experience in digital photography.

Ready to tackle any style or to face any challenge (within REASON!), the Geek has covered the bases in the following photographic genres and techniques: portraiture, architecture, still life, landscape, skyscape, abstract, live events, hand-painting, infra-red, night and long exposures, black and white, color and cross-processing.

The Geek got her first camera (a crappy 110 with built-in flash) at the age of 12 and has been in love ever since. Unfortunately, her next camera was a plastic 'Promo-Experts' (???) which was a free gift from a door-to-door salesman. The Geek's father filled in the salesman's survey *only* to get the camera for his teenaged daughter. Though the camera was made of plastic and quickly lost its shutter release button, frame counter and built-in lens cover, it was quite trustworthy and is still in the Geek's small but beloved camera collection.

The Geek's secondary camera had always been her dad's sexy Asahi Pentax SP. When photography became more than just a hobby, the ancient SP was handed down for more serious photo shoots, and has been the star camera of the Ask The Geek arsenal until April 2004.

In late 2003, an unfortunate series of events led to an eye hemorrhage, which permanently damaged the Geek's 3D vision and impaired her ability to focus a regular camera lens. At present, the Geek exclusively shoots with Canon series digital cameras which prevents wasted film stock, and costly 'experiments'. A photo purist, the Geek is constantly adjusting to the differences between digital and traditional film photography, but has fun exploring new techniques and shooting methods.

The Montreal Mirror had this to say about the Geek's website:
"Homegrown photo: The Geek, or Pixie(...), according to her improbable Web site bio, is a local photographer and artist whose work is worth taking a look at, if you like warm, squishy, bursting-with-colour images of fruit and flowers, or dark, sexy, gothic-bats-and-chains fetish images—or both, for that matter. The jaunty nautical image of a woman in striped stockings, a Battlestar Galactica-esque gas mask (and little else) may not be your typical seaside scene, but it certainly shows the Geek’s imagination at www.askthegeek.org"

- Michael Citrome's Twisted Lens, "Networthy", Montreal Mirror, June 29th - July 5th 2006. Vol.22 No.2 -

Many years of shooting live bands eventually gave way to doing personal projects and more consistently, portfolios for models who are looking for something a little different than the standard head shot.

*The Geek also goes by the pseudonym Ixx LaPee, or (p)ixie for short.*
