***** Specializing in women’s retail, Mad-Âme was the first Canadian retail
***** store addressing the needs of the female, female-identified,
***** androgynous, and lesbian consumer community. We try to offer a
unique shopping experience. The physical store has since closed, but the legacy
lives on as an e-store with other sections of the website hopefully shedding light
on lesbian issues, encouraging entrepreneurship, and spotlighting upcoming
artists in all media (music, fashion, design, visual art, performance art, etc!)
We offer prêt-à-porter clothing and shoes, tailoring services to modify pieces,
and we can even design one of a kind ensembles for special occasions. Mad-
Âme ensures that clothing fits women, rather than compelling women to fit our
clothing.
Originally from Calgary, Amy (creator and original owner of Mad-Âme), noticed
her friends had difficulty buying clothing they felt suited them. Later, when Amy
moved to Montreal, she discovered friends here felt the same way about clothing
options. She wondered why their consumer needs were not being met. As she
surveyed more and more people in her social community, the results were
overwhelmingly similar. Between body types and style preferences, few people
from the lesbian community even had a favourite store. Hunting all over the city
for adequate items, they were often made to feel uncomfortable for those choices.
Amy started formulating possible methods of response, and that's how Mad-
Âme came to be. After all, we should "make the clothes fit the person, not the
person fit the clothes!"
Why do we have such a hard time finding clothes that fit
us and that are flattering to our unique style and taste?
